Gathers Cafe

There is this little cafe called the Gathers Cafe which is pretty near Jalan Raja Uda. It is a pretty cute and cosy cafe which serves great coffee and dessert. The only down-point is that the cafe has a hell lot of rules for its customers to follow. This is the first time I enter a cafe with a rule board and some of the rules are really ridiculous. For example, NO COMBING HAIR? really...?

Nah, you don't say? O.O

Since it is almost Christmas time when I visited this cafe with my friends, the interior of the cafe was beautifully decorated with jolly christmas stuff

The lovely thing about this cafe is that it serves cute little ice cream snow man desserts. You get your ice cream in a bowl and another small cup containing espresso. You're suppose to pour the espresso on to the snowman and eat it together. It tastes really, really good :D

Soooo cute ♥ Snowman Espresso RM 11

This is the Banana Waffle. RM 6. I think the taste is so-so only for this.

And, because we had to wait quite some time before the desserts come, I even had time to take picture of the menu! HAHA :D I am not sure if the menu will change according to season like Christmas, New Year, etc. Still, hope it is useful to you guys ☺

Location of the shop:

Opening hours: Lunch till about 10PM.

Moustache Houze Cafe

Right after our trip to the 3D Interactive Museum (near the jetty) in Penang, we were so thirsty and tired so we headed to Penang Road to whack some few bowls of cendol which was too satisfying! Problem is, after our cendol whacking session, we didn't know what else to do to fill our time so we decided to head over to the Moustache Houze which is quite famous apparently.

PS: It is not easy to find parking around that area.

This is the interior of the cafe. I took this picture directly from the back most
of the shop so we can see almost the whole downstairs of the cafe this way.
The stairs leads to the other section of the cafe upstairs and the toilet is there.

Heehee, this is my beautiful friend sitting on the special swing chair!
The weird thing is, the swing chair doesn't swing. It is fixed.

The whole of the cafe is beautifully decorated so we can all enjoy our time
there, lazing around, taking some pictures while enjoying our drinks.

Honestly, we were all pretty full with all the cendol in our tummies. The only reason why we stepped into the cafe was probably we had nowhere to go and was finding for a nice place just to sit down. So, we didn't order much to drink or eat. My friend and I both ordered their special ice cube soda drink which I personally think is really expensive. But since it was something special that I've only seen in this cafe, I tried it anyway.

Here it is! The front glass contains kiwi ice cubes while the back glass has
chocolate ice cubes in it. We are suppose to pour the soda on to the ice cubes
and drink it. One set costs RM 11.90.

Do you see the moustache shaped paper cuttings on the straw? Well, most people would use that and place it over their mouths to take pictures and stuff. We were all so tired that we totally ignored those moustaches. It was not until we left the place that someone said, "Oh! We didn't take picture with the moustache thingy!"
Oh wells! :P

Restoran Kapitan at Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Exams are over! Met up with good friends on last Friday night for a movie and some lepak-session after a long time of not meeting each other. Thank goodness I decided to arrange this meet up because I was invited to go to Penang with them for a day trip the next day. And that means, loads of yummeh food on the way!

We left SP around 12.30 in the afternoon with empty stomachs so we were definitely in need of some lunch. One of my friend suggested this Restoran Kapitan which is a mamak restaurant like most of the others around Malaysia. They have pretty good food, I must say!

This is the rice station where you can choose whatever side dish you like.

The overall interior of the shop is well-ventilated with fans and stuff.
It is also pretty clean and neat compared to other mamak restaurants.

This is the other side of the kitchen and as you can see, there are big menus
and pictures to help you decide what to eat!

A waiter came over to take our order, and within 10 minutes of ordering, our food came. It was pretty quick service and the food was served hot. This was definitely a plus point for hungry youngsters like us at that moment!

This was my Cheese Garlic Naan with Tandoori Chicken ♥ RM 10.50

Garlic Naan with Tandoori Chicken ♥ RM 9.50

The famous claypot Nasi Briyani ♥ RM 8+

and this is Milani ♥ I don't know the price for this, heehee.

After eating, we went over to the counter to pay. It is easy to pay separately because there wasn't any charges for tax in our bill. I totally like that :D

Mee Goreng Thajudeen - Best Mee Goreng in Sungai Petani!

Regarding the title above, it is mostly an opinion of my boyfie.  He thinks the mee goreng below is second only to his favourite Mee Goreng Abu in Alor Setar. Of course, his opinion is super reliable because he is a super picky eater with picky taste buds and his recommendations are usually quite good. Especially to chin-cai people like me, heehee!

Mee Goreng ♥ RM 3.30

If you ask me how this plate of fried noodles taste like, I would say it is not spicy and brings a little tinge of sweetness too. Not too sweet though, just a little bit.

This is the exterior of the shop. We just parked the car at the road side and I
timidly took a shot of the exterior of the shop just to show you all. Erm, as
you can see, the shop is really located inside a bungalow and they have a very
eye-catching neon green signboard which can be seen from the main road above!

This is the interior of the shop from where I was sitting.
Honestly, I expected more people to be there since it was dinner time but it
was quite empty. Good thing that they have nice fans and clean table and chairs.

When I first arrived there, I got discouraged by the number of people in the restaurant. I honestly expected more people to be there because every online comment said the mee goreng were "TERBAIKKKK" and stuff. I went on to order 2 plates of mee goreng and drinks which were served pretty quickly due to the small number of customers at that moment. Then again, all worries were gone when I took my first bite. Yup, it was really good ☺ After finishing our mee goreng, my boyfie decided to order another plate of Pasembur because he isn't totally satisfied with his dinner yet.

Pasembur ♥ RM 3.30

Pasembur really isn't my thing since a long long time ago when I first tried it. I don't really fancy sweet stuff so I just ate a little of the pasembur. He, on the other hand, whacked it clean off the plate! I guess we will be going back to this place some other time too, to try their mee rebus. I will update this post again with the mee rebus if I ever visit this restaurant again!

Location of the shop:
RESTORAN TAULAT MEE THAJUDEEN
214B, Jalan Hospital
Sungai Petani
08000 Kedah.

Opening hours: Brunch, Lunch and Dinner (CLOSED ON FRIDAYS)

Landmarks:
1. Same row with the True Jesus Church
2. Same row with Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple ( a really magnificent temple at night with the lights on) but they are at two ends of the road.

Sweet Potato Porridge [Rice Cooker Recipe]

After many days of eating out, I decided that I should make porridge for dinner tonight. I know, I have OSCE and OSPE tomorrow and I should be studying... but honestly, I feel like exam is already over. Happens every time, especially the day right before the exam starts. In the past 4 months I've sat through 3 major exams at least and many uncountable minor ones, so that accounts for almost 1 major paper every month. A normal human being, like me, will definitely feel numb towards the thought of exam after all these repeated cycles.

Hence, I decided I should just screw studying like I've never studied before and have a nice afternoon nap before getting up to prepare my dinner at 5PM! :D

Ingredients: [Serves 1 person]
1 medium sized Japanese sweet potato
1 medium sized onion
Half a cup of rice
400ml of water
Salt
Pepper
Soy Sauce (Optional)

Hotmas Restaurant - SUPER BIG PORTION!

So two days ago, boyfie suddenly woke me up from my evening nap and told me we are going to dinner outside of campus. Like, the word 'food' itself led me to an immediate wake up, two splashes of water on my face, a few combs down my tangled hair and I'm ready to go. Yes, the power of food... especially non-campus food. He said we are going to go try Hotmas, which he heard about from some of his friends and he knows the restaurant sells a local kind of Western food. So, we set off and headed towards town again.

FYI, this isn't my photo, I found it in Google and used it here.
I arrived around 7PM at night, so it was darker and the sign board was lighted up.

We parked the car slightly before the restaurant and walked towards it. Most of the time, we find these places with the help of Waze (an app in my iPhone which is too damn useful ) and go around trying new places for food.

This is the interior of the restaurant. It is neat and tidy. Good enough for a
comfortable dinner!

It is a combination of two shops so there are two sides of the restaurant.
Still, it is always almost full during dinner time! The crowd is really satisfying!

While waiting for our food to come, I found out they even have their own
chilli sauce. Taste like McD's chilli sauce to me :P

After about less than 10 minutes wait, my order came first! It was super quick service!

This is the dish I ordered.
Grilled Chicken with Black Pepper Sauce ♥ RM 10

annnd then, his gigantic order came! Look at the size of the chicken.
Chicken Chop with Oriental Sauce ♥ RM 10
As we finished our main course, suddenly boyfie said he feels like trying the fried rice here. Although I was already super full even before I actually finished my chicken and he was also quite full already, I decided to share a plate of fried rice with him. So, I went over to the counter and add on an order.

I ordered Nasi Goreng Paprik ♥ RM 5
and this gigantic plate of rice came to us! :O
We finished it anyway, haha!

To us, we think this place is really good. The place serves good food which are gigantic in portion. What else can a hungry student with a frequent tight budget ask for? For God's sake, even the drinks here come in bigger sizes. While we were eating, we saw a waitress carry a glass of water which is about the size of jug to a nearby customer. The table next to us had like plates of lamb chops/steak which are as big as the size of the plate itself. I am definitely, definitely, definitely coming back to try that.

Location of the shop:

Dai You Bin Restaurant [大优宾点心]

Last Sunday, boyfie and I went out and headed to a new breakfast hunting spot in Sungai Petani. Yup, it is in a restaurant kind of shop rather than a normal kopitiam and it serves Dim Sum.

Before I continue on this post, I have got to clarify that certain pictures in this post are taken from Google while others which are watermarked are my own photos. I just didn't think of taking many pictures that day as there were many people and it was quite rush.

This is the exterior of the shop which you can see the moment you drive by.
It's time to find for a good parking by the time you see this shop from far.

and... this is the entrance.

Now, moving on to our DIM SUM :D
Just to let you all know, this dim sum restaurant is totally self service from top to bottom. You've got to grab your own dim sum, refill the hot water by yourself, and even when you want to takeaway any dim sum, you'll have to bring the dim sum to another place so that the worker can 'da bao' for you. Oh wells!

This is the steam cart where you choose all your steamed dim sum and
carry them to your table by  yourself on a tray.
Oh, remember to bring the paper that they will provide you with, as
they will tick the dim sum that you've taken on that little long paper.
Now, THIS!
This is what we kinda sorta chose that day. It don't look much
but it was filling enough for 2 person that day. I think the leaf-
wrapped rice was about RM 4, while the rest of the dim sum are
around RM 3 - 3.50 per plate.

Each egg tart cost RM 1.50 ♥
This is my favourite dim sum from this restaurant.
All in all, I would say that I expected better quality dim sum from a specialized restaurant like this one. In my opinion, the dim sum here is not exactly cheap too but I guess I expected such a price range the moment I step into the restaurant. Well, no harm trying new things :)

Location of the shop:

1-13 Lebuh Intan,
Sungai Petani,
08000 Kedah

Opening hours: Mostly for breakfast and brunch.

Breakfast hunting Spot #3, done!

Simple Guacamole Sandwiches - Student Recipe! ♥

Another week to go before I am due to sit for my GIT CA paper, another 2 final papers and also my GIT and RS OSCE.

STRESS LEVEL: ∞

Anyway, took a little break from studying today to make some sandwich for myself, and also the boyfie who has never tried guacamole before. Guacamole is originally a Mexican dish but has been adapted by many parts of the world now. When I told him what ingredients I'm going to put inside and also how I'm going to make the sandwich, he totally thinks he is not really going to like it. I am all set out to prove him wrong ☺

INGREDIENTS:

Wholemeal bread
1 medium sized avocado
1 medium sized tomato
1 medium sized onion
Salt
Pepper

How to Cook an Omelette with the Rice Cooker

I think I've reached another rice cooker milestone today.
Yes, I fried something with it.
I was really afraid that it won't be a success and I'll just waste all the eggs but luckily, I manage to get it fried properly after one failed try. The hard part about frying an omelette in the rice cooker is keeping the 'cook' button down. First of all, you will definitely need to heat the oil but the thin layer of oil is too light and it will be as if the rice cooker is empty. The 'cook' button will tend to pop up sometimes because of this. It is also super hard to flip the omelette inside a pot which is small in diameter and  deep too. These are the main challenges.

BUT I DID IT! :D

Ingredients:

4 large eggs
1 large tomato
1 large onion
Salt
Pepper
Corn oil

Breakfast in Sungai Petani - Lou Yu Kopitiam [老友小贩中心]

Another Saturday morning has come! Been really busy for the past week, studying for minor papers and also settling assignments which are due next week. Now that at least one assignment is almost done yesterday, I would say I can breath a little easier now. Well, at least for this weekend. So, this morning, boyfie and I headed out for our breakfast hunting again after a certain period of time. Today, we went to this local coffee shop called Lou Yu Kopitiam which is pretty good if you ask me. They have a good variety of food available to choose from, which is rare in the case of Sungai Petani.

The shop is a corner lot and look quite big. You can see it from the main road.
The interior is cooling as it is very well shaded using the blinds.
Good atmosphere to eat!
I actually have been to this coffee shop twice. I decided to try on more food first, before I blog about it. This morning, I had quite a lot of food since we ordered some add ons besides our bowl of noodle. Super full now, while I type this blog post! ☺

Duck Meat Kuey Teow Soup ♥ RM 3.50

Dry Beef Noodles with Soup ♥ RM 5

Char Kuey Teow with Duck Eggs ♥ RM 3.50

Tom Yam Noodles with Fried Fish ♥ RM 4.50

Tau Fu Fah ♥ RM 1.20

I shall call this EGG IN MEAT ♥ RM 1.50 per half

Location of the shop:

151, Jalan Masjid 1,
Sungai Petani,
08000 Kedah.
Opening hours: Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch time

So, do the food in the pictures stir up your cravings? Heeheehee. Breakfast hunting Spot #2, done!

Batu 14 Puchong Yong Tau Foo [Kota Kemuning Branch]

During my holidays back home, I was always indecisive on what to eat because there was just too many choices. Like, I feel like eating everything but I just can't seem to choose one! One fateful night, we were not very hungry but we still had to find for dinner because my mother is simply the kind of person that insists her daughters have 3 proper meals a day. I didn't know what to eat and suddenly she said, "Want to have Yong Tau Fu? Kota Kemuning there got open a new branch of Puchong Yong Tau Fu, we can try." So, there we go!

This is the exterior of the shop!

The inside of the shop is more modern and cleaner compared to the original branch.

Tadaaaa! Yong Tau Fu with soup ♥ The soup is fantastic okay!

These are the fried stuff. I personally love the fried things more!
YUM YUM YUM ♥♥♥

Erm, I first got to know about Puchong Yong Tau Fu when my uncle brought me to the original Puchong branch which is opposite a chinese school, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Han Ming. I really loved it very much and had been going back to the Puchong branch for a few times since then. Well, just google about Puchong Yong Tau Fu and you will find tonnes of photos and information about this great food haven.

About this Kota Kemuning branch, if I were to give a landmark, I would say that the restaurant is located right next to (or right behind) the Bukit Rimau AEON Big hypermarket. It is very close really, walking distance only. It is totally obscured from the main road, so you'll have to turn into the area to see the restaurant.

When you arrive at this restaurant, just choose a table first and remember the table number. Then, head over to the place where you can see all the raw vegetables and other bean curd stuffs. At that counter, you just grab a basket and take anything you want to eat. Hand the basket over to the person-in-charge at the counter and they will automatically help you decide which are going to enter the soup and which are going to be fried. Of course, you can specifically tell them how to cook it if you want, but most of the time I just leave it to them. Tell them your table number and you decide whether you want to add fishballs or other stuff into your soup base. They will serve it to you later.

Besides Yong Tau Fu, you can also order other side dished like Paper-wrapped chicken (纸包鸡), stir-fried vegetables, chicken dishes, etc. Honestly, I can't comment on these dishes because I have never had them  before! I always head there to have their yummy Yong Tau Fu only, teehee! ☺

Location of the shop:
